Since 2019, historical movements, isolation, and a revolution of awareness has prompted the underground music scene to dramatically rewrite the legacy of song. Emotionally cognizant, alternative genres challenge mainstream music as we know it, miraculously reinventing representations of raw identities. The commercial music industry marginalizes advancing progressive developments, cutting it off from outlets that enable musicians to connect and flourish. For more than half a century, underground music has consistently instigated an important and necessary tension between itself and popular music culture. More recently, the idiosyncratic rise of underground music has grown tenfold; networking platforms make the music world a much smaller place. As a designer, I am interested in addressing this valuable yet slow-burning music riot by creating a coherent, dynamic networking aid for underground musicians; a mobile tool that not only inspires and extends the outreach of underground musicians but also algorithmically fashions a visual aesthetic to echo the respective artist’s identity. This application will be a custom archive, styled by the user’s perspective and preference, and communication platform. Ultimately, a space to equip these visionary makers to enact their rebellion against the commercial music industry while simultaneously celebrating the unique style and personality of today’s up-and-coming progressive musicians.
